In a strategic move to cater to the growing demand for locally produced hardware, HMD Global, the company behind the Nokia mobile phone brand, has commenced the production of 5G smartphones in Europe. The first device to roll off the assembly line is the Nokia XR21, now available to enterprise customers.
HMD Global had previously announced its intention to assemble Nokia devices in the EU at MWC 2023. This development aligns with projections that the European smartphone market will grow by about 7% in 2024. Jean-Francois Baril, co-founder, chairman, and CEO of HMD Global, expressed his delight with the manufacturing of the Nokia XR21 in Europe. The company remains committed to enhancing the security and durability of the devices they produce.
The Nokia XR21 is designed to withstand various conditions, thanks to its military-grade durability certification and an IP69K rating, making it resistant to dust, heat, impact, and water. The phone’s chassis is constructed from 100% recycled aluminium, and its two-day battery life supports 60% more charges over its lifetime.
A limited edition of the Nokia XR21, manufactured in Europe, features a distinctive Frosted Platinum colour, individual serial number engravings, and includes a certificate of origin in the box. Only 50 Nokia XR21 limited edition smartphones have been created, with 30 of these being the first devices off the European assembly line. These units are available for purchase on Nokia’s official website for a price of €699 (£599) in select European countries.
The Nokia XR21 European edition in black will soon be available starting at €649 (£549) in various European countries.
This move by HMD Global signifies a significant shift in the smartphone industry, emphasizing the importance of local manufacturing and addressing security and sustainability concerns.
